Cooyght 2023 New Fiction Spotlight

I find myself vacuuming my carpet not only to keep it clean but also to erase the footprints left behind. It may sound strange, but this is how I was raised. My mother was a stickler for cleanliness. With a house full of kids, she didn’t have time to clean up after all of us. Instead, she taught us the importance of maintaining a tidy home. Every Saturday was dedicated to deep cleaning, and our house would shine and smell like fresh flowers. The polished floors and meticulously vacuumed carpet created a truly beautiful living space.

My mother’s dedication extended beyond cleaning. She would cook breakfast and dinner, style the girls’ hair, and make sure we were all bathed and ready for bed. But it was the habit of erasing footprints from the carpet that stuck with me. It served as a reminder of the constant presence of family and friends in our home.

The footprints in my home aren’t a nuisance because we have a strict no-shoes policy. I keep blue shoe covers for technicians and those who prefer to keep their shoes on. However, the footprints still bother me. Even if the house had no visitors for a while, the footprints on the carpet remind me of where I’ve been in my home.

Have you ever noticed which areas of your home see the most activity? I discovered that my bedroom had the most carpet prints out of all the rooms. Is that strange, or am I more inclined to spend time in my bedroom?

Let me explain. I constantly move in and out of my bedroom throughout the day. Other areas of the house have fewer footprints because I spend more time there. I know you might be wondering why this matters in the grand scheme.

In reality, it may not hold much significance. However, sometimes, it’s the little quirks and habits that connect us to our past and bring a sense of comfort and nostalgia. For me, vacuuming to erase footprints from my carpet is one of those habits. It connects me to my childhood and the clean, organized home my mother worked so hard to maintain.

In a way, it serves as a reminder of the love and care that went into creating a beautiful and inviting space for our family and guests. It reflects the values my mother instilled in us – the importance of cleanliness, order, and taking pride in our surroundings.

Although it may seem trivial, I’ve noticed the areas in my home with the most footprints. It has made me reflect on my daily routines and where I spend most of my time. We all have our favorite spots in our homes. Whether it’s the cozy living room where we gather with loved ones, the kitchen where delicious meals are prepared, or the backyard where we bask in the sun, each area holds its significance and memories.

So, while my obsession with erasing footprints from my carpet may appear peculiar, it serves as a gentle reminder of the love and effort that went into creating a beautiful home and the importance of cherishing the spaces where we live, love, and create lasting memories.

Rest in peace, Mom. Your legacy lives on in the cleanliness and warmth of my home. ❤️
